The iPhone 7- Worth The Investment?

Apple has launched the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

The phones will be available shortly and pre-orders, according to reports, are extremely strong.

Early indicators show the new device offers some nice upgrades over the iPhone6, and 6S. But are there enough to warrant an upgrade or large spend to get one?

Size matters and the iPhone 7 is about the same as the 6S. It has a 4.7 inch screen. The iPhone 7 Plus has the larger 5.5 inch screen and some nice added camera features to boot, more about that later.

Apple says the screen has more brightness, HD Retina Display is 25% brighter than the previous version and now includes a pressure sensitive 3D Touch Layer. This creates a buzz when you press it and hold onto the screen.

The phone is also said to be water-resistant. Much like the phones from Samsung and Sony. Not sure you would want to drop in a fountain or toilet but if it slips into a beverage cup or takes on some moisture there should be no damage to the device.

A big change is the lack of a headphone jack. Now one will have to utilize Apple's new Earpods headphones to hear music and audio. These can connect through the Lightning Connector Port and enclosed adapter. There is also a wireless Airpods Headset for sale that can be connected through auto-pairing.

The 7 has two cameras. The back camera size remains the same as the 6S with 12 megapixels, however there is a larger aperture and optical image stabilization. Your photo taking should be steadier.

The front facing camera jumps up to 7 megapixels from the five megapixels on the 6S. It also includes auto image stabilization.

The 7 Plus takes it a step further for those serious about photography. It has a wide-angle and a telephoto lens on the back. It includes 2x optical zoom. Reports are the images are enhanced for low light shooting.

In a first for Apple, the phone will come with stereo speakers. One speaker will be at the top and the other on bottom.

Apple is promising more battery life with the new phones. They estimate 12 hours of LTE browsing with the iPhone 7 and perhaps 14 hours with the 7 Plus.

Operating speed is said to be enhanced with the 7's new A10 Fusion chip, 64-bit quad-core processor. The company said it is 40 percent faster than the previous A9 processor. Users should get higher performance contributing to the improved battery life.

Those who take lots of photos and videos or need extended space, will find more storage options. These include 32GB, 128GB and even 256GB capacities.

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will be available in several colors. These include jet black, matte black, gold, silver and rose gold.

Pricing will vary whether you are eligible for an upgrade plan or need to purchase it outright. Full price for the iPhone 7 runs from $649 for the 32 GB version to $849 for the 256 GB edition. The 7 Plus starts at $769 for 32 GB and tops out at $969 for 256 GB.

iPhone fans who line-up for Apple's "latest and greatest" products will most likely secure the newer devices. Others will have to determine if the improvements in operation, battery life and camera quality are worth the investment.

Iphone Insurance - How Should You Protect Your Expensive iPhone?

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few months, you will have heard of the iPhone and all the fuss around it.

It is a handheld device from Apple, the makers of the iPod and the Apple Mac computer. It combines a mobile phone with an easy-to-use internet browser, and a big iPod (a music/sound MP3 player). So, in one device, you can listen to your favourite songs or radio shows, talk with your friends, and check the web for ... well, whatever you want to check the web for.

Anyone who has not yet used one is usually confused or resistant to the charms of the iPhone, saying it is all a big load of hype and marketing, in order to sell the device.

Anyone who has used an iPhone is usually raving mad about it, how great it is, how it is the next major breakthrough in telecommunications and gadgetry.

The truth is, in the next few years we will all be looking back on the iPhone as a groundbreaking item that many other manufacturers copied. It is far more advanced than any other phone or PDA handheld device available - by a long way.

All this super-advanced technology means one thing to its price: It is not cheap.

There are a few knock on effects of it being expensive:

1. iPhone owners will be quite careful of their new delight
2. Others will covet and be jealous of your iPhone - because you are the proud owner, and
3. Criminals will specifically target the iPhone for theft.

This being the case, you would imagine that there is a lot of insurance policies for iPhones available. Sadly, this is not the case.

There is only 1 policy that is specifically a stated "iPhone Insurance" (more on that later) but there are a few other options.

One option that is often touted as a way around getting specific insurance for an expensive item it adding it to your household insurance. This can work, but there are 3 key drawbacks to doing this.

1. Usually home insurance policies have a FAR higher excess than any specific insurance policy, often £150 or more.
2. If you make a claim (albeit relatively small) for your iPhone on your house insurance, your house insurance premium will likely be more expensive next year. It will go through the roof.
3. How long would you comfortably be without your phone? You might expect it to be a long while for your house insurance to process a claim. Household insurers have been known to take weeks to solve a claim. Most customers cannot accept to wait weeks for their phone to be replaced. Are household insurers experts at replacing phones? Would you go to get your tooth fixed in a general hospital? Probably not. You would go to the expert, the specialist - the dentist. In the same way, it might be a wise move to use a specialist insurance firm to insure your iPhone.

This all leaves the question - What specialist insurer is there, that protects you and your iPhone with a decent level of cover AND is cost effective?

Let's look at what 'cost-effective' is:

The iPhone is only available on the O2 network. You can get an unofficial one, which has been unlocked, to work on other networks, but lets look at the official picture. The costs is £269 for the handset, plus there is a 24-month contract at either £35, £45 or £55 per month.

If you lost your iPhone after 6 months from getting it, you would still be contractually obliged to pay every month for the next 18 months. That means 18 months multiplied by a minimum of £35 per month ... a total of £630 or more - whether you got a replacement handset or not.

So in this instance you would need some kind of replacement to justify spending the £35+ each month.

Aside from this, there is the cost of replacement itself. This is likely to be around £600, although you might be able to get a second hand or less-than-legitimate iPhone for less.

So any insurance that would get you a replacement for a considerable amount less than £600 is cost-effective. Ideally (obviously) it needs to be as low cost as possible, but equally obviously, there is going to be some cost involved in the replacement.

You would then also want to consider what eventualities you want the insurance to protect you from - what level of cover do you need? iPhone theft might seem the most obvious possibility, but do you want to be protected if you simply lose it? Or if it is damaged? Do you need cover while you are abroad? Do you need extended warranty (ie if it simply stops working or malfunctions after the 12 month statutory manufacturer's warranty)?

You need to think about this before you spend any money on what you think is 'insurance' for your iPhone - but actually might not be adequate protection. You could be paying for only one of these levels of cover.

A quick search on Google at http://www.google.co.uk will show you what your options are. And almost all roads lead to a company called 2u - http://www.2u.co.uk/iPhoneInsurance ... Doubtless other companies will follow 2u's lead once they see the success 2u is having with the iPhone Insurance. But meanwhile, it appears the best way to protect yourself is to insure it using the 2u iPhone Insurance.

According to the 2u webpage, it does offer cover for loss, theft, damage, water damage, international cover, fraudulent calls once stolen and extended warrantee, which pretty much covers all the bases you might want.

Wherever you chose to get yours from, one thing is clear - once you have got your iPhone and you start to realise what a great piece of kit it is, you are probably going to want to protect it with some kind of insurance that protects you and your iPhone properly.

All of us folks who are lucky enough to already have an iPhone know how much fun they can be just to play around with. Playing with my iPhone a lot myself, I have discovered some cool tips and tricks that you may find useful.
1. If you tap once at the very top of the screen when you are on the internet, it will take you back to the top of the window rather than having to scroll all the way back up. A nice time saving feature.
2. If you set the font to the smallest size, you can read more in the internet window. An advantage of this is that when you want to click a link, you can pinch (expand) that area and the link will come up very large, making it much easier to click.
3. Rather than posting the full address of internet sites in bookmarks, you can post the equivalent RSS address instead into Apple's RSS reader and save that as your bookmark. This way you can quickly see if there's anything interesting on your favorite site rather than downloading the whole homepage.
4. If you are writing something and the iPhone flags a word as misspelled that you know is not misspelled, cancel the correction 3 times and the word will be put into the dictionary. If you write a lot, this feature is quite useful!
5. The magnifying glass is a nice iPhone tool when you are typing an email or any other text. If you tap once and hold, a magnifying glass will pop up showing you a zoomed in view of your words and cursor. You can now easily place the cursor wherever you want. This makes editing your writing very easy.
6. You can move icons around, but not on the home screen. You have to go to the ipod section. Go to iPod > More > Edit. Now you can drag your icons all around. This can also be done in the phone section.
7. To reset your iphone, hold down the right button and the "home" front button for about 6 seconds. To power it back on, push the top button. This is different than a regular shutdown, which can be done easily by holding the sleep/wake button for 6 seconds.
8. If you get a lot of spam e-mail or other unwanted e-mail, pay attention to this time saving feature. Add a link to Yahoo mail in Safari bookmarks. From there you can check 'delete all' to remove all unwanted e-mails. This is much easier than deleting hundreds of spam e-mails one at a time.
